ADRE Grade III and Grade IV: the complete preparation guide
Pattern by qualification level, the −0.25 arithmetic, a four-phase plan and the Assam GK method that one practice session turns into marks for every paper.
The Assam Direct Recruitment Examination fills thousands of Grade III and Grade IV posts. It rewards breadth and accuracy more than depth: wide Assam and India GK, steady English and arithmetic, and the discipline not to guess blindly under negative marking.

Eligibility checklist
- Age 18–40 in ADRE 2.0, with relaxations for reserved categories. Check the ADRE 3.0 notice.
- Grade III: Class 10 (Driver posts, with a valid licence), Class 12 or a bachelor’s degree, depending on the post.
- Grade IV: Class 8 or Class 10. Candidates above Class 12 were not eligible for Grade IV in ADRE 2.0.
- Permanent residency of Assam and employment-exchange registration rules applied.
Pace and marking
- Time budget. Grade III: 180 min ÷ 150 = 72 s per question. Grade IV: 150 min ÷ 135 ≈ 67 s.
- When to attempt. Answer what you know in a first pass, mark the rest, then return. With −0.25 for a wrong answer, attempt when you can rule out at least one option.
- The arithmetic. With +1 / −0.25 and four options, a blind guess averages +0.06 marks: close to nothing. Ruling out one option makes it +0.17, ruling out two makes it +0.38.
Tips from জয়যাত্ৰা
- Know your paper level first. Grade III has separate papers for degree, Higher Secondary and HSLC (driver) levels; Grade IV for Class 10 and Class 8. Practise at your level in the Assam GK hub.
- Assam GK is the multiplier. Assam History and Geography carry heavily in the paper and count for APSC, Police and TET too. One bank section a day covers all 4,000 MCQs well before the exam.
- Two passes. Answer everything you know in the first pass and mark the rest. Return only to questions where you can rule out at least one option.
- 72 seconds is your budget in Grade III (180 minutes for 150 questions). Practise with the ADRE mini mock in joyjatra Go, which uses this pace.
- OMR discipline. Bubble as you go, not at the end. Practise filling a sample OMR in your full mocks.
A phase-by-phase plan
- Verify and baseline · Week 1–2
2 h a day. Confirm your post level (Class 8, 10, 12 or degree) and age on the latest notice. Take one diagnostic per subject to find your starting point. Collect documents early: HSLC admit card, PRC, caste and employment-exchange certificates.
- Core build · Months 1–3
2–3 h a day. Mathematics and English daily: they carry the most marks. Assam History and Geography: one bank section per week (200–400 questions each). Reasoning: 20 questions a day, timed. Current affairs: 15 minutes a day, a weekly Assam summary.
- Practice and mocks · Months 4–5
3 h a day. One full-format mock a week, rising to two. Review every wrong answer and log the reason. Re-attempt weak Assam GK sections until accuracy passes 75%.
- Final month · Last 4 weeks
3–4 h a day. Mocks at the real time slot; refine your first-pass / second-pass routine. Revise recall cards and the mistake notebook only. Check admit card, centre and documents a week ahead.
A typical week
| Day | Focus |
|---|---|
| Mon | Mathematics + Assam History section |
| Tue | English + reasoning |
| Wed | Mathematics + Assam Geography section |
| Thu | Social Studies (India) + GK |
| Fri | English comprehension + reasoning |
| Sat | Full mock + review |
| Sun | Current affairs summary, recall cards, rest |
Common traps
- Studying ADRE 2.0 material without checking the ADRE 3.0 notice
- Blind guessing: at −0.25 a blind guess is worth almost nothing
- Ignoring English and arithmetic because Assam GK feels more important
